As parents, we want the best for our children, especially when it comes to their education.

We understand the importance of providing them with a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

One crucial step of their educational journey is preschool, which plays a vital role in their early childhood development. In this article, we explore the preschool policies in Minnesota and answer the question that might be on your mind: Is preschool mandated for all children in Minnesota?

Before we explore the specifics of Minnesota’s preschool requirements, let’s take a moment to recognize the significance of early childhood education. Research has shown that the early years of a child’s life are critical for their cognitive, social, and emotional development.

By providing your child with a quality education during these formative years, we can help them build a strong educational foundation that will benefit them throughout their lives, make them less likely to repeat a grade, more likely to be prepared for later grades, and more likely to graduate high school.

Is Preschool Mandatory In Minnesota For All Children?

What is Preschool?

Preschool is an early childhood education program designed to provide young children with foundational learning experiences before they enter kindergarten. It offers a structured environment where children, typically aged 3 to 5 years, can engage in activities that promote their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.

There are multiple locations were your child could complete a preschool curriculum:
  • Childcare Centers
  • Public / Private Preschools
  • Early Childhood Education Centers / Head Start and Early Head Start
  • Montessori / Faith-Based Preschools
  • Homeschooling
  • Online and Virtual Preschools

Preschool Requirements in Minnesota

Short Answer: No, Preschool is not required in the state of Minnesota

While children are not required to attend preschool, Minnesota emphasizes the importance of early learning and encourages parents to enroll their children in preschool programs for the benefit of the child. This is because the state recognizes that preschool attendance can significantly contribute to a child’s educational development and readiness for kindergarten, both socially and academically.

Keep in mind Minnesota Statute 120A. 22 requires children between 7 and 16 years of age to attend a public or private school for the entire time the public schools in the district are in session. The only exemption to this is if a parent or guardian can show the child’s physical or mental condition or other circumstances make regular attendance impossible.

This individualized approach supports each child’s unique learning style and developmental needs.  Early Advantage completes an individualized assessment for all children twice per year. This personalized approach allows our caregivers to understand the unique needs of each child and implement adjustments to lesson plans, curriculum, and more.
  6. Focus on Socialization:

This extended schedule can accommodate full-day care and extended care options before and after standard preschool hours.  As a year-round program, Early Advantage only closes during 6 major holidays, 3 staff conference days, and typically does not close due to weather like other district school locations.
  9. Beyond Public Schools:
While public school systems often provide early education options, quality preschool services extend beyond these settings. Our center offers flexible schedules, personalized attention, and a focus on early childhood development that may not always be available in traditional public school programs. Each of our caregivers are personally invested in the growth and success of your child.
